Exhibition Description:
This exhibition features artworks centered on the themes of simplicity and complexity, exploring how forms of intelligence are positioned as dominant societal forces. Highlights include pieces inspired by LEGO blocks, minimalist sculptures based on atomic grids, and more intricate representations, such as medieval deadman sculptures. Other works investigate concepts related to space exploration and the construction of self-sustaining mini-greenhouse environments for planetary survival. Through these themes, the exhibition directly engages with contemporary issues such as technological advancement, sustainability, and the ethical challenges of artificial and natural intelligence. Nicholaas Chiao considers his Conceptual Artworks the most essential aspect of his practice; as of 2024, these works have not been realized in physical exhibitions and remain as digital art and computer renderings. The significance of this digital conceptual work lies in its ability to transcend the limitations of physical media, allowing Chiao to experiment with complex ideas, virtual forms, and innovative structures that might not be feasible in traditional formats. Digital platforms also enable broader accessibility and interaction, fostering discourse about art’s potential in an increasingly technological society. His conceptual projects comment on the complexities of modern society, addressing evolution, education, technology, competition, ethics, and the cycles of life and death. Chiao cites artists such as Damien Hirst and minimalist Donald Judd as influences. His unique contribution lies in adapting conceptual art strategies to address the pressing concerns of the 2020s, notably by integrating ethical reflection, geometric composition, and precise color theory to interrogate global issues confronting contemporary culture.
